Description
We are seeking a motivated Scientist with hands-on experience in upstream bioprocessing to support laboratory-scale vaccine development and process optimization. This role will focus on bioreactor operations for microbial fermentation and mammalian cell culture, as well as reagent preparation, in-process monitoring, and data analysis. The Scientist will collaborate closely with client staff, supporting both routine and project-specific laboratory activities in a fast-paced environment. This position requires excellent communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities
- Perform lab-scale upstream processing, including bacterial fermentation and mammalian cell culture
- Prepare laboratory reagents, solutions, and culture media to support experiments
- Set up and operate process equipment for small-scale experiments
- Conduct in-process monitoring assays, including cell counts, optical density, and metabolite analysis
- Provide needs-based support for purification of vaccine products and process intermediates
- Analyze, collate, and track data; report findings promptly to client staff
- Maintain clear and accurate records, following Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
- Communicate effectively and promptly with client staff members to ensure project alignment
- Support occasional off-hour and/or weekend work as needed (within a standard 40-hour workweek)
- Work independently and efficiently while contributing to team goals
Education
- B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, Bio/Chemical Engineering, or related scientific or engineering field
Experience
- Minimum of six months laboratory experience in upstream-focused bioprocessing (bioreactor operations for bacterial fermentation and/or mammalian cell culture)
- General laboratory skills, including aseptic technique and pipetting
- Experience culturing microbial and/or mammalian cells
- Background in basic cell-based assays (e.g., cell counting, OD measurements, metabolite analysis)
- Proficiency in solution, reagent, and buffer preparation
- Strong computer literacy, including Excel (formulas, linking spreadsheets)
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques, multitask, keep accurate records, and follow instructions
- Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain a positive, team-oriented mindset
Additional Information
- Preferred: Experience with downstream/primary recovery operations (lysis, centrifugation, filtration)
- Onsite role with occasional off-hours or weekend support required
- Position emphasizes collaboration with client staff, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving
