Description

At Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) in Boston, we are on a quest for cures with the mission of turning breakthrough science into life-changing medicines. As part of Discovery Biologics, our team combines leading drug discovery capabilities with world-class R&D to advance multidisciplinary biotherapeutic programs. We are seeking a dedicated contractor to support our Molecular Biology Core, working on high-throughput molecular cloning, DNA preparation, host handling, and automated lab operations. This hands-on, laboratory-based role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your technical enthusiasm and directly contribute to early-stage biologics discovery.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day operations and core routine tasks to support high-throughput molecular biology workflows.
  • Prepare, sterilize, and maintain adequate supplies of bacterial and yeast growth media.
  • Fulfill molecular cloning and DNA preparation requests, delivering purified DNA to cross-functional teams.
  • Execute precise sample preparation, labeling, aliquoting, and registration in laboratory databases.
  • Maintain meticulous experimental records using electronic lab notebooks (ELN) and internal registration systems.
  • Operate and assist with the maintenance of existing automation and liquid handling equipment.
  • Manage inventory by ordering and organizing necessary laboratory reagents, consumables, and supplies.
  • Collaborate closely with team members to help drive multidisciplinary biotherapeutic discovery initiatives.

Education

  • BA/BS degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline.

Experience

  • Hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology, microbiology, and recombinant DNA technologies.
  • Proficiency in microbial handling, host growth, and transformation (bacterial and yeast systems).
  • Preferred experience with core techniques including PCR, restriction enzyme digestion, DNA purification, SDS-PAGE, and Western Blotting.
  • Preferred experience or familiarity with DNA analysis software (e.g., Geneious Prime) and laboratory automation/liquid handling systems.
